Dreaming awake

Woke early morning at 3 and then couldn't sleep. So bought million dollar arm the movie about two Indian kids chosen for a major league baseball team. Interesting line.... "I wanted to play baseball all my life but never dreamt it will be possible. " got me thinking that there are so many things I wanted to do but never started.... Realised there's no right time to start... All that's needed is a dream and passion and the desire to then make me work hard... The dreams that we have while awake are the ones that drive our lives. Here's a good morning from raghudon and hoping you too dream while awake and then work baby steps to fulfill it...

Earth in True Perspective
Everything is relative. You don't need to be Einstein to understand that. A human is as big to an ant as a building may be to him. However, the world always seems such a huge place; so many countries, cities, forests, oceans, lakes, icebergs. So many animals and species. So much history.

But ever since we developed the ability to look beyond our atmosphere, it became more and more apparent that our blue marble is tiny. Too tiny to even comprehend, when compared to other planets, stars, galaxies and the universe itself. So just to give you an idea of how tiny we really are here on planet earth, here are some visual aids.

AN AIRLINE PILOT’S STORY ABOUT BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The world started taking notice of the 'Indian Ingenuity' about the time when software professionals were needed to help businesses with the Y2K issue. After that, our IT engineers started spreading their wings all over. Everyone has now accepted that India had arrived on the brain map of the world. But we know that this was not the real beginning - our ingenuity has a long history.

I would like to share one incident with you, which took place on one of my flights to prove my point. It could become a case study for any good business management school/ college. You can decide about that after you read the story.

THE FLIGHT

This happened on one of my flights when I was flying the Airbus-310 in Air India to the Gulf. It was on Jeddah – Mumbai sector some time in 1987/88. This was way before 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre. Terrorism had not shown its ugly face on the flights yet.   The atmosphere on the flights used to be very cordial and friendly. I used to follow a  routine  on all my  flights which I continued with  till my retirement in 1998 . After reaching the designated altitude and settling down for some time, I would hand over the controls to my co-pilot and take a walk around in the aircraft. I would go right up to the tail section of the aero plane to meet the passengers on board and the crew as well. This habit of mine kept the cabin crew on their toes and the passengers were happy to see their pilot mixing around with them. The fear of terrorists, terrorism was unheard of. Those were the wonderful and blissful days of freedom on board the aircraft.

On this particular flight, when I reached the tail section I found a very strange group of people. They were really odd looking passengers. Some of them were maimed, some looked polio affected or with some deformity.  They all were dressed very poorly. They did not look like Gulf returnees. After flying in the Gulf for a long time, we could make out a Gulf returnee at first glance.  On seeing such a crowd  I asked our In-flight Supervisor if these people had asked for some sort of help on landing .The answer  was 'No'. A normal passenger in such a condition would certainly ask for a wheelchair.  All that looked very odd to me.  So after my round when I got back to the cockpit it kept bugging me about that odd group. I thought that I must investigate more about them.

So after some time I went back again to the tail section of the aircraft and asked the purser who was working in that section about the group .He told me that the group had two persons looking after all of them. I met those guys and started talking to them. I asked them where are they from. On seeing me in uniform they were very reluctant to talk to me. On persisting one of them said that they were from Eastern UP.  I told them that I had also stayed in that part of our country for some time when I was posted to Air force Station at Gorakhpur .They could not believe me as one of them was from Gorakhpur. After exchanging few notes they were convinced that I was telling the truth. Then the next thing I asked them was if they wanted to see the 'Hawai Jahaj', the airplane. Of course, they were keen. So I took both of them to the front and showed the cockpit from the door. On seeing all that they were just speechless. By now they were very much at home with me. Now when I asked them a few more questions, the whole story came tumbling out - and what a story that was!  What I heard was just mind boggling.

THE STORY

The group was of about 25/30 people. They were all Muslim beggars from Eastern UP. They were brought to Jeddah for 'UMRAH' pilgrimage before the start of the month of 'Ramadan' by their 'Bade Chacha' who was sitting up front somewhere. Now they all were going back after 'Ramadan' and after the Id celebrations, There is NO problem about getting their passports and other permissions as there is no quota for 'Umrah' pilgrimage. They all stayed in a cheap 'Musafirkhana' in Jeddah. Their ONLY job during their stay at Jeddah was that during 'Ramadan' every evening they had to go and BEG in front different mosques in the city. At the end of the day all the money that was collected by them would be handed over to the 'Bade Chacha'. Nothing more was required from them. After they reached their homes in India, they all would be given Rs. 10,000 / (Ten thousand) cash. That sort of money they would never see again in their life. When they told me how all that was done, I had to salute the INGENUITY of their 'Bade Chacha'.

MODUS OPERANDI

This is how the things worked.  The BOSS (Bade Chacha) used to collect 25 to 30 Muslim beggars in UP well before the beginning of 'Ramadan'- month of fasting.  He would have no difficulty in getting passports/Visa for them from the Lucknow Passport Office. Any Muslim could apply for 'Umrah' pilgrimage at any time as there are no restrictions on their travel. He would then approach Air India through his travel agent for a group booking asking for the cheapest rates which he could get. After reaching Jeddah he would accommodate them in the cheapest 'Musafirkhana'. As there is no big rush like the HAJ time, he would have no problem on that. He would spend very little on that account. Food for all these people would come from different mosques, where food is distributed to any one before the sunrise and after the sunset. Expenses on food during the day are nil as all of them are supposed to be fasting. So for the whole month of Ramadan feeding this big group was NO big problem.

Now during Ramadan, before breaking their daily fast the local Arabs would like to dole out alms (big amounts) to the needy and poor. So all these people would BEG in front different mosques and the money collected would be given to the Boss. After Ramadan there would be Id celebrations where these people would earn even more. So after a nice stay of more than a month in Jeddah they would head back home. A very smart operation performed by any standard.

After a long chat I told them to get back to their seats with a promise that they will introduce me to their 'Bade Chacha' after landing.

AFTER LANDING

After reaching Mumbai when we, the cockpit crew, reached the customs hall, I found my friends with their Bade Chacha waiting for their checked in baggage. So I went and met the boss. He looked like a very nice and docile man. When I asked him about his activities, he told me that he was doing all this for these poor people. They would never get a chance to do the HAJ pilgrimage so as good hearted man he was doing all this. I told him that I very much appreciated his good deed and we parted.

While going back home I started thinking about the whole flight and my encounter with this group of people.  I found that this to be a fantastic case of WIN - WIN - WIN situation. Going over in my mind I realised that every single person is happy in this story.

The Arab who doled out alms to the needy before breaking his fast during Ramadan was very happy for doing some good deed for that day.

The Muslim Beggar, who could never have imagined a plane ride and the religious pilgrimage, was able to do so. Then for more than a month he had a food feast! Free of charge. On finishing the whole trip he would be given ten thousand rupees cash in hand. He would be the happiest man on the earth.

Now about the 'Bade Chacha'. When we all thought and calculated about the whole operation we realised that this man even after taking care of all the expenses for the group must have earned a cool amount of ten to twelve lakh of rupees per trip. One can imagine the value of that in 1987. So he too would a very happy man.

The events on this whole flight got me thinking .Every single person involved in this story was happy and satisfied. But there was a tinge of exploitation somewhere at some stage. I could not pin point it where! So I wrote an article on the episode which published in one of the Marathi newspapers. I thought I had covered all the angles of the story. BUT that was not the case!

TAIL PIECE

After about a month when I was going on a flight, one of the Immigration officers came to me and asked me my name and then introduced himself.  He had read my article in the newspaper and he wanted to talk about that. The information he came out with was even more baffling and much more interesting.  Since he was working at the airport, his info was very authentic.

This was the time when Indian economy had not opened up to the world markets as yet. Gadgets like Washing machines, VCR's, TV's were very much in demand. So the travel agent who had booked this group would import such gadgets on their names as 'UNACCOMPANIED' baggage later on. Those poor people would not know anything about this at all. The custom rule was that passengers can get such stuff into the country within three months of their arrival date. So everything was proper and legal. There was a ready market available for such items which would be sold with very big premiums. So now the travel agent and few officers shared the loot. This was the fourth or fifth angle to my story. MIND BOGGLING.

I hope now you will agree with me that this is qualifies as a case study for any Business Management school/college. This was a Win-Win-Win-Win situation, everyone is happy in the end.

One thing is for sure, you can't beat the INDIAN INGENUITY at beating a system.

Lessons on Living

Dear Frnds, This is an old mail, you must have read it, thought of sharing again. Its important  .

In 1923, nine of the wealthiest people in the world met at Chicago's Edge Water Beach Hotel .

Their combined wealth, it is estimated, exceeded the wealth of the government of the United States at that time. These men certainly knew how to make a living and accumulate wealth. Attending the meeting were the following men:

1.  The president of the largest steel company,

2.  The president of the largest utility company,

3.  The president of the largest gas company,

4.  The president of the New York Stock Exchange,

5.  The president of the Bank of International Settlements,

6.  The greatest wheat speculator,

7.  The greatest bear on Wall Street,

8.  The head of the World's greatest monopoly &

9.  A member of President Harding's cabinet.

That's a pretty impressive line-up of people by anyone's yardstick.

Yet, 25 years later, where were those nine industrial giants?

Let's examine what happened to them 25 years later.
1.      The  President of the then largest steel company (Bethlehem Steel Corp), Charles M Schwab, lived on borrowed capital for five years before he died bankrupt.

2.      The President of the then largest gas company, Howard Hubson, went insane.

3.      One of the greatest commodity traders (Wheat Speculator), Arthur Cutten, died insolvent.

4.    The then President of the New York Stock Exchange, Richard Whitney, was sent to jail.

5.      The member of the US President's Cabinet (the member of President Harding's cabinet), Albert Fall, was pardoned from jail just to be able to go home and die in peace.

6.      The greatest "bear" on Wall Street, Jesse Livermore committed suicide.

7.      The President of the then world's greatest monopoly, Ivar Krueger, committed suicide.

8.      The President of the Bank of International Settlement, Leon Fraser, committed Suicide.

9.   The president of the largest utility company, Samuel Insull, died penniless.

What they forgot was how to "make" life while they got busy making money!

Money in itself is not evil; it provides food for the hungry, medicine for the sick, clothes for the needy. Money is only a medium of exchange.

We need two kinds of education:

a) One that teaches us how to make a living

and

b) One that teaches us how to live.
..........

There are many of us who are so engrossed in our professional life that we neglect our family, health and social responsibilities.

If asked why we do this, we would reply that "We are doing it for our family".

Yet, our kids are sleeping when we leave home. They are sleeping when we come back home!! Twenty years later, we'll turn back, and they'll all be gone, to pursue their own dreams and their own lives.

Without water, a ship cannot move.  The ship needs water, but if the water gets into the ship, the ship will face existential problems. What was once a means of living for the ship will now become a means of destruction.

Similarly we live in a time where earning is a necessity but let not the earning enter our hearts, for what was once a means of living will surely become a means of destruction for us as well.

So take a moment and ask yourself……….
Has the water entered my ship?
I hope Not!😀

If China, Pakistan and Sri Lanka attack India at the same time, how long will it take to defeat India?

Look at it this way. If military strength is compared to a no holds barred fight, we have roughly a following distribution.

China is a professional boxer Lee. A world class one at that.

India is a street cop, Kumar. Can take care of street rats, but no match for the boxer when it comes to fight.

Pakistan is his 13 year old brother, Ali, aggressive, hot head, but untrained and fragile.

Sri Lanka is a 5 year old kid, Thiru.

Now, suppose, Ali, Lee and Thiru, all have decided to beat the shit out of Kumar, in a no holds barred street fight at Kumar's home. Who will Kumar worry the most about?  But obviously, Lee.

Kumar quickly slaps Thiru and Ali, making way to save himself from Lee. Lee, however is a professional, he throws a solid punch at Kumar's face, Kumar ducks, but couldn't evade the second punch right into his ribs. Kumar starts bleeding. He throws a couple of hands at Lee himself, but Lee doesn't find it anything close to painful. Meanwhile, Ali, tries to get hold of Kumar, Kumar, lends a solid kick to Ali, fending him off for some time, but this gives ample opportunity to Lee to deliver another sucker punch.

Kumar clearly knows that he will be defeated by Lee. He knew it before the fight even began. But what are Lee's intentions? Is it beating down Kumar just enough, or to do some serious damage?

If it is beating down Kumar, then he is probably done. He will leave the fight, and Kumar will let go of his anger on Ali. Thiru is just a kid here, whom Kumar loves very much anyways, so after a couple of slaps, Thiru would just be crying beyond measure.

Now, suppose, that's not the case. Then, it's a no holds barred fight, remember. Lee keeps on taking Kumar's case. Kumar is adamant, he won't bow. In this mind numbing scenario, Kumar accidentally punches Thiru, and Thiru was badly bruised. Ali keeps on getting his share of mis delivered punches from Lee, and a couple of solid blows from Kumar.

Kumar knows, that if he ends up fighting with Lee, with punches, he will be crippled permanently. So, he knows he has a grenade. But then, Lee has a grenade too. Both of them warn each other of their own grenades. Ali says, I have a grenade too. Both Kumar and Lee share a laugh. Ali says, I am damn serious. Both of them know, grenades are only to be used in situation of desperation, as they would both die, if it comes down to them, but have no faith whatsoever in Ali. Lee increases his unintentional blows to Ali. Things get ugly, the fight between Lee and Kumar becomes seriously bloody, but hasn't yet come down to the bombs.

Now, there are 3 neighbors down the next lane, USA as Andy, UK as Wilson and Russia as Vladimir. Andy is the MMA world champion. He hates Lee and has an on and off relationship with Ali. Andy, although he is the best in the world, shows off his power by beating and looting random 10 year olds like Iraq and Afghanistan, and uses them to practice actual fight. So, he is feared, seriously.

Wilson and Vlad are both WWE wrestlers, plenty of show off, but not really in a mood of real fight.

They all are seriously pissed off with Lee, for stealing all their business.

Now, when they realize that with Kumar beaten up, Lee will be ruling a full corner of the neighborhood, they realize that this would make Lee a grave danger to themselves and their livelihood. They also know that Lee, ultimately aims to take over the full area. They also know that if it comes down to bombs, the whole neighborhood is destroyed.

So, Andy threatens Lee to stay away from Kumar. Lee, says "Bullshit". Vlad and Wilson will keep on delivering Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson style lines, but will wait for Andy to do anything. Andy delivers couple of warnings more to Lee who in turn delivers another couple of punches to Kumar, and Andy says it's enough. Kumar is seriously bleeding now, and is seriously contemplating taken Lee down with himself using bombs, before Lee does some permanent damage to him. Andy knows this, and Lee knows this, but Lee wants to extract some more. Andy sees, it's enough.

Ali, meanwhile knows he can't take on Andy, says sorry to Andy, and sits like a good boy at home, leaving Kumar and his home. Andy even gives him money for an ice cream. Thiru, has gone missing in all this. May be, he would be found sometime later.

Andy steps in, delivers 3 solid kicks to Lee. Lee starts bleeding now. He knows that things have gone out of hand. Depending upon his mood, he will either step back, still swearing at Kumar, or if he has grown really powerful, take a stone and throw it at Andy's house.

This seriously infuriates Andy, who is now going to beat the shit out of Lee. He punches and kicks and punches and kicks Lee. Fighting moves to Lee's home. Lee, threatens Andy now, that he has got the bomb. Andy replies, "You have got bombs? I have got 100 times bigger bombs than you do." (which is by the way completely true). Lee is afraid. Wilson and Vlad join in, deliver a couple of punches to Lee, who is strangled by Andy.

Lee knows that this is seriously getting out of his hand now. He calls for help. But everybody hates him. Nobody comes. His own brother, Lama (Tibet), who is merely a 10 year old kid, whom he used to bully, comes to join the party and deliver two inconsequential blows to Lee.

Lee quickly changes stance, and makes peace with Andy. He gives all the money he made from Andy's customers back to Andy. Wilson and Vlad demand a share from Andy. Andy is like "Seriously?". They both shut up. Lee is bruised enough not to take on  Kumar again. Kumar is bruised enough not to take on him again. Lee takes out his wrath on Lama. Seriously.

Kumar's and Lee's houses as well as bodies are a shitty mess. One fourth of Kumar's house needs to be rebuilt, but he still owns the property. Ali never had a house, and has taken some serious damage. Thiru is still missing. Another kid, Gorkha (Nepal) has gone missing.

Meanwhile, in the next lane, Kawasaki (Japan) and Pufendorf (Germany) are celebrating Christmas in July, with Lee and Kumar out of business.

Some Random Acts of Selflessness

The problem in this world is that every one wants to bring about a revolution and no one wants to do a little. If we all did the little we could, the revolution would take place, the change would come.
~~Raghudon!

Thats the spirit my friend. ... Small stuff we do will help. By himself not everyone can be gandhiji or from the gandhi family....hmmmmm thats food for thought...... But u doing the bit will help....

If ppl r still readibg lets try to put in small things here as a list thay will make a difference anf can be done by us. The memorable Father Dias once said...Your life and my life are made of trifels but life itself is not a trifle... The most understated statement ever heard by me. Its deep

Sponsor the school education of two kids. ..of course not ur own but some poor persons like ir maid or driver or peom

Give food to 10 people through the year that you skipped a meal out of. I.e. Instead of eating out make food for more people and give the rest to some poor people

Speak to parents of boys who are capable of being married and cinvince them not to take dowry

Educate the people 2 of them who would be wofe beaters. Take it till where you can go. Tell the girl to tie rakhi to u then u become her sister... Then do it

Remove old clothees from your cupboard and give it to some needy people

Id love to see your ideas so that i too can use them to make MY life better. My logic is we all do things for ourselves and our loved ones. A random act of kindness will give you unbridled joy that money cannot get

Go and give food to stray puppies 20 times in a year and play with them for 10 minutes. Doesnt it give you as much joy as playing with your child

Thank so called menial work people like your watchman or your kachrawallah or the policeman you see in the corner. Shake hands with 25 people through the year and tell then they are doing such an awesome job. Ask thwm their name and then say thank you pandu bhai or shantaji. U will make thier month and you will feel good too

Writing this i feel soooooo small that we can all do so many things but we dont and are running the rat race at top speed. ...this speed only makes us a rat. After we go...no one will remember how much money we made or the vacations we took.... But the sapling we planted will be the legacy we leave behind

Plant 10 trees in a year and documebt where you planted it. If possible make a small placard and put it there as a menory for u. Go see the tree grow every year and speak to it. Am sure it will answer back. We plant these in and around our factory but you can always do it in public space

PS: This was just ambled along when I was writing in one post. I would loveto hear your ways to make our lives less selfish and more to the society. Would love to hear if any of these "targets" made sense to you and made a difference ...'Please write in..... Raghudon Speaks!

A software engineers diary

Written by An Indian Software Engineer
A Bitter Reality

As the dream of most parents I had acquired a degree in
Software Engineering and joined a company based in USA, the land of braves and opportunity. When I arrived in the USA, it
was as if a dream had come true.

Here at last I was in the place where I want to be. I decided I
would be staying in this country for about Five years in which
time I would have earned enough money to settle down in India.

My father was a government employee and after his retirement,
the only asset he could acquire was a decent one bedroom flat.

I wanted to do some thing more than him. I started feeling
homesick and lonely as the time passed. I used to call home and
speak to my parents every week using cheap international phone
cards. Two years passed, two years of Burgers at McDonald's and
pizzas and discos and 2 years watching the foreign exchange
rate getting happy whenever the Rupee value went down.

Finally I decided to get married. Told my parents that I have
only 10 days of holidays and everything must be done within
these 10 days. I got my ticket booked in the cheapest flight.
Was jubilant and was actually enjoying hopping for gifts for
all my friends back home. If I miss anyone then there will be
talks. After reaching home I spent home one week going through
all the photographs of girls and as the time was getting
shorter I was forced to select one candidate.

In-laws told me, to my surprise, that I would have to get
married in 2-3 days, as I will not get anymore holidays. After
the marriage, it was time to return to USA, after giving some
money to my parents and telling the neighbors to look after
them, we returned to USA.

My wife enjoyed this country for about two months and then she
started feeling lonely. The frequency of calling India
increased to twice in a week sometimes 3 times a week. Our
savings started diminishing.

After two more years we started to
have kids. Two lovely kids, a boy and a girl, were gifted to us
by the almighty. Every time I spoke to my parents, they asked
me to come to India so that they can see their grand-children.

Every year I decide to go to India… But part work part
monetary conditions prevented it. Years went by and visiting
India was a distant dream. Then suddenly one day I got a
message that my parents were seriously sick. I tried but I
couldn't get any holidays and thus could not go to India ... The
next message I got was my parents had passed away and as there
was no one to do the last rights the society members had done
whatever they could. I was depressed. My parents had passed
away without seeing their grand children.

After couple more years passed away, much to my children's
dislike and my wife's joy we returned to India to settle down.
I started to look for a suitable property, but to my dismay my
savings were short and the property prices had gone up during
all these years. I had to return to the USA...

My wife refused to come back with me and my children refused to
stay in India... My 2 children and I returned to USA after
promising my wife I would be back for good after two years.

Time passed by, my daughter decided to get married to an
American and my son was happy living in USA... I decided that
had enough and wound-up every thing and returned to India... I
had just enough money to buy a decent 02 bedroom flat in a
well-developed locality.

Now I am 60 years old and the only time I go out of the flat is
for the routine visit to the nearby temple. My faithful wife
has also left me and gone to the holy abode.

Sometimes

I wondered was it worth all this?

My father, even after staying in India,

Had a house to his name and I too have
the same nothing more.

I lost my parents and children for just ONE EXTRA BEDROOM.

Looking out from the window I see a lot of children dancing.
This damned cable TV has spoiled our new generation and these
children are losing their values and culture because of it. I
get occasional cards from my children asking I am alright. Well
at least they remember me.

Now perhaps after I die it will be the neighbors again who will
be performing my last rights, God Bless them.

But the question
still
remains 'was all this worth it?'

I am still searching for an answer.................!!!

START THINKING

IS IT JUST FOR ONE EXTRA BEDROOM???

LIFE IS BEYOND THIS …..DON'T JUST LEAVE YOUR LIFE ……..
START LIVING IT …….
LIVE IT AS YOU WANT IT TO BE ……
